Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery. The latest innovation in surgery is the use of the surgical robot. Our surgeons were the first to offer robotic surgery in the greater Tupelo area for a variety of surgical problems. It helps surgeons perform different procedures with more precision, flexibility, and control. Surgeons can perform delicate and complex procedures that may have been difficult or impossible with other methods. It can also provide a better, more detailed 3-D view of the operating site than the human eye can provide.
Robotic instruments allow the surgeon maximum range of motion and precision. The process includes very small tools attached to a robotic arm while the surgeon controls the robotic arm with a computer. A thin tube with a camera attached to the end of it allows the surgeon to view enlarged 3-D images. The robot matches the surgeon’s hand movements to perform the procedure using the tiny instruments. This allows the surgeon to make precise, delicate motions while controlling the machine. The robot is never making decisions or performing incisions on its own. Rather, the surgeon is telling the robot what to do, allowing for greater precision. Additionally, this technique may allow for fewer complications and a quicker recovery. In essence, the effect is to give the surgeon unprecedented control in a minimally invasive environment. Source.
The robot may be offered for select patients and conditions. Please feel free to discuss this with your surgeon. We offer the following surgeries using robotics:
- Colon Surgery
- Gallbladder Surgery
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Surgery
- Inguinal and Ventral Hernia Surgery
Above all, we strive to offer the best patient care possible. If you would like to request an appointment, click here.
