Surgery

the focus: endocrine glands

Endocrine surgery is a surgery that focuses on the endocrine glands. The endocrine glands secrete hormones or other products directly into the blood. Endocrine surgery may include the thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands. Additionally, surgery may include the adrenal glands and glands of the endocrine pancreas. We use minimally invasive surgical approaches whenever possible.

Certainly, our surgeons are dedicated to providing excellent care for patients with thyroid cancer and thyroid nodules. We place a special emphasis on coordinating care. As a result, patients can experience a comprehensive consult in one visit. These include:

  • Parathyroid Surgery
  • Thyroid Surgery

The Parathyroid Glands

The parathyroid glands consist of four individual pieces that are small and round. They’re attached to the back of the thyroid gland in your neck. Parathyroid glands regulate the amount of calcium in your blood. But, when the calcium level is low in your bloodstream, these glands release parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH takes calcium from your bones. So, you may need parathyroid surgery if you have hypercalcemia, adenomas, cancerous tumors, or parathyroid hyperplasia.

The thyroid

The thyroid is a small gland located in the lower front part of the neck. The thyroid helps regulate metabolism, proper organ function, and body heat conservation. So, you may need thyroid surgery if your thyroid produces too much hormone or develops structural problems. Structural problems include swelling and the growth of nodules, tumors, or cysts.

The procedure

A lobectomy is the removal of only half of the thyroid. A subtotal thyroidectomy removes the thyroid gland but leaves behind a small amount of thyroid tissue. So, this preserves some thyroid function. A total thyroidectomy removes the entire thyroid and the thyroid tissue. There are many types of surgery within the endocrinology field, but no matter the surgery, we strive to offer the best patient care possible.
