Comparing Robotic, Laparoscopic, and Open Surgical Procedures

Surgery Associates is committed to continuous innovation. This dedication is what has allowed us to continually build a thriving practice for over four decades. As part of our dedication to patient care, we proudly utilize the Da Vinci Surgical System by Intuitive Surgical. Intuitive has developed new operating room capabilities for 20 years, and using their systems, such as Da Vinci, in the OR has allowed us to provide minimally invasive surgery with reduced outcome variability. Robotic surgery has revolutionized care when it comes to colon, gallbladder, and hernia surgeries. Today, we are comparing three kinds of procedures offered at Surgery Associates: laparoscopic, robotic, and open procedures.

Laparoscopic Procedures

  • What is laparoscopic surgery? In general surgery procedures, laparoscopic surgery is an advanced technology in which the surgeon operates inside the body through a small tube that is connected to a video monitor.
  • What are the benefits of this technique? Rather than the single-incision approach of traditional surgery methods, this minimally-invasive technique uses several .5-1 cm incisions. Additionally, patients typically experience less pain, recovery time, and scarring.
  • What operations are performed laparoscopically? Gallbladder and hernia operations are two common laparoscopic operations performed at Surgery Associates. We also offer intestinal procedures, appendectomies, biopsies and special diagnoses, and Nissen Fundoplication and LINX procedures (surgical treatments designed to alleviate acid reflux).

Robotic Procedures

  • What is robotic surgery? Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery. The latest innovation in surgery is the use of the surgical robot. Surgery Associates was the first to offer robotic surgery in the greater Tupelo area for a variety of surgical problems.
  • What are the benefits of this technique? Robotic surgery helps surgeons perform different procedures with more precision, flexibility, and control. Surgeons can perform delicate and complex procedures that may have been difficult or impossible with other methods. It can also provide a better, more detailed 3-D view of the operating site than the human eye can provide.
  • What operations are performed with robotic surgery? At Surgery Assocites, we provide robotic colon, gastroesopageal reflux (GERD), gallbladder, and inguinal and ventral hernia surgeries.

Open Surgery Procedures

  • What is open surgery? Also known as traditional or conventional surgery, open surgery means cutting the skin and tissues so that the surgeon has a full view of the structures or organs involved.
  • What are the benefits of open surgery? An open procedure provides the surgeon better access to complex or large internal structures that may be difficult to reach using less invasive techniques. However, open surgery does have some drawbacks, typically including a longer recovery time, a more noticeable scar, and a higher risk of postoperative infection.
  • What operations are performed using this technique? Procedures offered at Surgery Associates using laparoscopic or robotic techniques can also be performed openly. Your physician will help you decide the best course of treatment for you.
